Top of the Barrel in MMA

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

372935_jumpNot all MMA fighters make enough money to support themselves that way, so don’t head off to train at a school like MMA Richmond with the idea that you’re going to get into MMA and get rich.

It’s possible, but only for the really big names who win consistently and who have been in the sport for a while. Other fighters have to have ‘real jobs’ along with their MMA careers until they make it big, or sometimes for as long as they are involved in the sport if they never really get a big break in it.

The cream of the crop when it comes to the heavyweights in MMA include names like Fedor Emelianenko, Antonio Nogueira, Frank Mir, Josh Barnett, and similar fighters. If you watch MMA and have been doing so for some time these are household names.

A lot of the other fighters, though, you might not have heard of or you might not remember who they are. They aren’t getting rich from their MMA fighting but, for a lot of people, the sport isn’t about money – it’s just what they love to do.

MMA UFC Fighting Taking Over Boxing

Sunday, March 15th, 2009

419566_judokatyWhen it comes to boxing, a lot of people think that it’s a dying sport. There hasn’t been much going on in the boxing world since Mike Tyson, and many fans of the sport are now turning to MMA instead. They are watching, and some of them are coming into schools like MMA Richmond because they want to learn to fight in the MMA, too.

Even for people who would never think of fighting, the MMA holds a lot of interest on a spectator level. It’s like a boxing match in many ways but yet there is kickboxing, wrestling, and several different types of martial arts that are used in it as well. It makes for an exciting time for a spectator and it requires a lot of fighting prowess.

If you put a boxer up against an MMA fighter, the MMA fighter would almost always win simply because he or she has more moves and is more versatile when it comes to submitting an opponent. A boxer knows how to punch. Someone who is in the MMA knows how to fight, and that there is more to fighting than just punching.

Steroids at MMA Richmond a No No

Friday, March 13th, 2009

458327_china_town_mexicoIf you want to train at a high quality mixed martial arts school like MMA Richmond you have to know that they don’t tolerate steroid use or abuse and that they aren’t interested in training someone who’s going to be taking the performance enhancing drugs.

Steroids might help you get bigger and stronger at a more rapid rate but that doesn’t mean that they’re good for you or your overall MMA fighting career. MMA fighters have been banned before when they’ve found to be using steroids and that’s going to be something that continues in the future, so it’s well worth being aware of.

You can’t get away with it at MMA Richmond and other schools, and you can’t get away with it when you’re involved in mixed martial arts professionally, so the best thing that you can do is to just stay away from steroids completely. They are extremely bad for your body and they can do a lot of damage to a person in the long run. They are also illegal, and not worth the trouble that you could get into. Train hard at a school like MMA Richmond and learn to fight on your own merits.

Combat Phases of MMA

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

477416_karate_kickWhen it comes to MMA, there are specific areas of combat. The fighters start out standing and trading punches and kicks, much like a kick boxing match. From that point, if there isn’t a knockout, they will usually do one of two things – they will either get into a standing grapple called a clinch or one MMA fighter will take the other fighter to the ground.

The clinch is based on Muay Thai fighting, and taking an opponent down to the ground usually results in wrestling moves or other moves based on Judo and Jiu Jitsu. All of these work well to submit an MMA opponent. Mostly, it just depends on the two fighters and what their individual styles are like.

If you go to a school like MMA Richmond you can learn all of these areas of technique so you won’t be left behind when a fighter tries one of these moves. It can help you be a better and more well-rounded MMA fighter and make sure that you aren’t as easily defeated. Knowing the combat phases and practicing many different styles won’t make you unbeatable in the MMA, but it will help your abilities and your confident level.

What It Takes to be an MMA Richmond Fighter

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

588786_karate_1If you want to be an MMA fighter you’ll need to train at a school like MMA Richmond. If you wonder whether you have what it takes, though, you have some things to consider.

First, your overall physical condition is very important. Not everyone is in good enough shape to start training as an MMA fighter at schools like MMA Richmond. If you’re not in good physical shape already you’d be better off with a few months of physical conditioning before you start any actual training as an MMA fighter. After that you need to train in a lot of different areas.

Because MMA involves fighting on your feet and on the ground you need to be able to do more than just one thing in order to have the highest chance of being successful. The instructors at MMA Richmond have a lot of experience in the martial arts and in training MMA fighters. They can let you know what you need to do and they can help you start working toward a career as an MMA fighter.

MMA Fighters Look Down on Pro Wrestlers

Monday, March 9th, 2009

588787_karate_2While it may not be true of all MMA fighters, the general consensus among them is that they have little to no respect for professional wrestlers.

They have a problem with the fact that the professional wrestling world is based solely on entertainment and the ‘wrestling’ is fake and staged. They know the skill that goes into MMA, where people train at schools like MMA Richmond in order to be competent and high quality fighters.

Those who fight in the MMA generally think that professional wrestlers don’t have anything like the same kind of work ethic or skill level, so they look down on them and don’t think that they are as important. Whether this is true is a subject that’s up for debate, of course, because professional wrestlers actually work very hard at what they do.

Despite that it seems likely that people in the MMA won’t start giving professional wrestlers any kind of respect for a very long time to come. As MMA becomes more mainstream and more wrestlers cross over, some respect might start to be earned.

Why Brock Lesnar is Sneered at by MMA Fighters

Saturday, March 7th, 2009

brockBrock Lesnar, like a few others in the MMA today, made the majority of his money and fame as a professional wrestler.

People who don’t know that much about various types of fighting and sport will generally not see why that’s a problem, but a lot of MMA fighters feel that Lesnar and others like him haven’t paid their dues because wrestling is allegedly not as difficult as MMA.

When people get involved in mixed martial arts they usually train at schools like MMA Richmond and they work on a lot of different styles. Professional wrestlers are thought to work on only one set of very specific skills and not do as much work. In reality, these people work very hard and are competent and talented athletes, but that doesn’t mean that the people in MMA have to respect that or agree with it.

If people eventually begin to change their minds regarding the value of the training behind professional wrestling people like Lesnar won’t have as much of a problem fitting in where the MMA is concerned.

Advice for a Future MMA Fighter

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

659230_karate_girlMMA is big business now, and a lot of people want to get in on the action, but not everyone can make a living as an MMA fighter. The best way to have a chance at it, though, is to follow a few simple rules.

First, you should have a manager to represent you, and possibly an agent as well. They keep you from being required to deal with the business side of things so you can work on training and fighting. A lot of people who want to be in the MMA train at places like MMA Richmond and they fight as often as they realistically can so that they have the best chance to succeed.

You also want to create a good online presence for yourself and make sure that you act like a professional fighter and not some barroom brawler. You’ll gain a lot more respect from others in the MMA if you conduct yourself properly. Make sure you get sponsorships any time you can and that you act like a showman in the ring. People come because they want entertainment, and you have to give it to them.

Find the Best MMA Training Videos

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

661185_karate_girlsThere are a lot of options for people who want to train for MMA. One of the things that a lot of people do is attend schools like MMA Richmond, but you can’t be there all the time.

When you’re not at a school training, you’ll want to be able to train at home, and a great way to do that is to get some MMA videos that you can watch. There are a lot of different videos, and it’s easy to get confused about which of them you should use and which will work the best for you.

Rather than select videos on one particular style, try to find some that offer an overall MMA system. They will help you more than buying a lot of specialized videos that only teach you one style or technique. If you need extra information on something specific you can purchase a video on that later, once you’ve become more well-rounded as a fighter. Getting training videos offered by specific MMA fighters is also a good option because these can teach you the techniques that the pros themselves are using.
